The Power of Self-Disclosure: How Sharing My ADHD Journey Empowers My Students

Ever felt like an outsider and couldn’t place why? That was my story for the longest time. My journey from confusion to understanding began with a late diagnosis of ADHD. Suddenly, those perceived character flaws had a name, and I embarked on a transformative journey of self-acceptance.

Today, as a senior lecturer and course leader, I want to share the power of self-disclosure and how it’s impacted not just me, but my students. It is not comfortable to share my story, but I understand how important being able to see someone that “looks like me” can be…

1. The Magic of Self-Disclosure #

Self-disclosure is more than just sharing; it’s about opening up, being vulnerable, and inviting others into your world. In the academic realm, this simple act can bridge gaps, foster trust, and cultivate deeper connections with students.

2. Embracing the Role Model Mantle #

Being a lecturer and degree course leader is not just about disseminating knowledge. It’s about leading by example. By speaking about my ADHD experiences, I aim to shatter stereotypes and create a space where neurodiversity is celebrated, not shunned.

3. Impacting the Next Generation #

When students see someone like them, someone with shared experiences, in leadership roles, it’s transformative. It offers hope, inspires confidence, and most importantly, instils a sense of belonging. No longer are they outsiders; they’re part of a community where their experiences are valued and understood.

4. Recognising and Valuing Diverse Journeys #

Every student’s journey is unique. While I’ve had my struggles and triumphs, it’s crucial to understand that each individual’s path is different. By being aware of my own survivor bias, I strive to offer genuine empathy and tailored support, valuing each student’s experiences.

A Personal Note… #

Life before understanding my ADHD was a maze of self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy. Today, it’s about using that understanding to better myself and empower others. My hope is that by sharing my journey, I can light the way for others, helping them navigate their paths with confidence and grace.
